The Mara and Serengeti areas were once vast grasslands dominated by lions, elephant and the deplorable tsetse fly. The latter kept most of the cattle herding tribes of the region away from the area. However with the arrival of hunters in the 1800s thousands of predators were hunted near to extinction. This left a large void in the balance of the ecosystem. Later in 1889 Rinderpest (a cattle sickness) killed off 95% of ruminants on the continent. This further left a void in the ecosystem. With the predator populations depleted and other ruminants numbers low, the wildebeest were able to grow unhindered. ...
