The
#Alucia was built in France in the 1970s. She's equipped with a science and media lab that enables us to simultaneously facilitate excellent research about our oceans, as well as capture their wonders for the rest of the world to see. She's 56 meters long and has two submersibles (the difference between a submarine and a submersible is they don't live in the water—they live on a support vessel). Here she is in Antarctica on the shoot for Blue Planet II. There's actually a whole sequence in Episode 2 where the ship and crew get a star turn as they attempt to dive to 1000 meters deep in Antarctica for the first time. Spoiler Alert: They did it, and the amount of life down there was absolutely mind-blowing. Our sub team leader, Buck Taylor, said it was more lush than tropical reefs he's seen. Visit our YouTube, where you can see for yourself. (
