Unlike a lot of Sherpas who mostly just climb for the money, she has a much deeper motivation. When she was young her father died on Everest, lost in a crevasse between camp 1 and 2. After his death, life for her family wasn’t easy. She was forced to quit school and stay at home to take care of her grandmother. As she grew up, her burning desire to climb Everest was not only a way to honor her father, but also an opportunity for a better life. She was a part of the SHERPA film expedition team in 2014, and I witnessed her say goodbye to her grandmother that season, telling her she was going “trekking” so she wouldn’t worry.
