One important thing to note is that Sherpas with a capital “S” are not porters, but the ethnicity of people who inhabit the Everest region. With a lowercase “s,” sherpas have widely become known to the general public as specialized, high-altitude porters on Everest and other high Himalayan peaks. The porter pictured here is actually from the Tamang ethnicity, which is one of the many lower-land cultures of Nepal. Hardly any Sherpas take work portering loads such as this but rather play their odds in the more dangerous work of high-altitude guiding and rigging, piloting fixed-wing planes, or running the lodges.
