New discovery alert! Last week, our friends
@schmidtocean discovered and mapped a new reef within the Great Barrier Reef system. The last time a new reef of this size and significance was discovered was over 120 years ago, and at 500 m (1,640 ft), this reef is taller than the Empire State Building.
.
This remarkable new discovery is near a well-studied ecosystem and underscores the need for efforts like
#30x30 that will help protect key areas of our ocean so we can continue to explore, discover and understand our planet.
.
Remotely-operated vehicle SuBastian is diving the reef now. To join scientists as they continue to explore this new reef, head over to the
@schmidtocean page for details to tune in to the livestream on Facebook and Youtube.
