There are so many ways that a story can be told. In whatever form, you find new perspectives with every story, maybe even push the boundaries of your own beliefs. At Pesta Raya, master of the tales of the supernatural KC Champion certainly had us considering the possibilities of spirits hanging around the Annexe Studio. Indonesian indie alt-rockers Efek Rumah Kaca spun their narrative through lyrics about politics and society, while sound designer Syafiq Halid and soundscape duo Kicau-Bilau brought us to a new panggung (stage) through generative music, improv and audio-reactive visual projections, all inspired by motifs of traditional wood carvings and disassembled Malay instruments. #pestaraya 2023 filled us with stories of the Nusantara told from the heart—through music, theatre and performing arts.
