Three is the magic number—at least for these doll-like Hainanese rod puppets, which have three rods for manipulation. These belong to the last surviving Hainanese rod puppet troupe in Singapore, San Chun Long, and originate from Wenchang of Hainan island, China. They are about 60-70cm in height and weigh up to 4kg with their intricately beaded head gear. The puppets represent various characters in traditional Chinese tales, including noble ladies, emperors, court officials and villains. Held in conjunction with the Mid-Autumn Festival, Moonfest celebrates the festive season with performances rooted in Chinese traditions. San Chun Long is one of three Chinese puppet troupes performing in Moonfest, each one being the last of their kind in Singapore. 🔗 in bio for more. • Photos 1 & 2 by Malcolm Ng • #esplandesg #mydurian
