Once practised in secret by slaves forced to adopt the religion of their oppressors, Candomblé is an Afro-Brazilian syncretic faith that combines elements of African culture and Catholicism. The drums play a significant role in ceremonies meant to summon African deities known as orixás. Complex syncopated rhythms send devotees into a hypnotised state, prompting chants and dances specific to the deity. While drummers are never possessed, they witness and respond accordingly with their music.
