Glorification and praise of the divine: This is the meaning of the kirtan, a musical tradition unique to Sikhism. Founded in the 16th century by poet and composer Guru Nanak, the faith’s foundation is built on poetry and music. Its sacred scripture includes verses set to specific ragas (a series of notes and melodic pathways in Indian classical music).
