In Korea’s oldest folk religion, the shaman plays an important role as a mediator. In rituals known as “gut”, music and dance are used to achieve trance and create a communal union between the gods and their believers. Shamans are also consummate singers, having committed to memory a staggering number of sacred songs and narratives.
