#OnThisDay on 21 Nov 1972, the Robinsons Department Store building at Raffles Place was ravaged by a fire. The damage spread to the shophouse next door, which housed The Gallery of Fine Art. Salvaging what she could, the gallery owner gathered what was left of her collection and moved the gallery to Raffles Hotel. A few years later, she moved the gallery again, this time to Orchard Hotel, where it thrived selling Singapore art to international buyers. She would become so loved by the local art community that on her 70th birthday, 24 of the artists she had worked with held an exhibition dedicated to her, entitled The Mother of the Artists. Who was this gallery owner? The ever-resourceful Della Butcher a.k.a. the Mother of Singapore Artists. (That's her in the photo!)
