#OnThisDay on 6 Sep in 1958, Majulah Singapura was performed in public for the first time by the Singapore Chamber Ensemble at the Victoria Theatre to mark the reopening of the theatre. The song, composed by Malay songwriter Zubir Said, would become Singapore’s national anthem. Pak Zubir was one of Singapore’s earliest Malay-language songwriters, penning over 1,000 songs for Malay films by the Shaw Brothers and Cathay-Keris film studios, but Majulah Singapura remains his most famous work.
