A popular North Indian saying goes “Katha kahe so kathak” (one who tells a story is a kathak). And from what we saw at rehearsals yesterday, kathak soloist Ponnamma Devaiah is certainly a prime example of that. Originating from the nomadic storytelling tribes of ancient northern India, kathak is one of eight Indian classical dances best known for its expressive form, complex footwork and spins. Fast, whirling movements matched with subtle, mimetic facial expressions and hand gestures bring to life a story that mesmerises audiences as the dance progresses in rhythm and speed.
