"On this day in 1968, true to his word, Dr. King returned to march in solidarity with the sanitation workers and the Memphis community. Memphians, including high school students who skipped school to attend, began arriving around 9 am. However, MLK and the SCLC didn't join until around 11 am, leaving the crowd restless and frustrated with the heavy police presence and lack of action. About 10-15 minutes after MLK was ushered to the front of the march, someone broke a window of a business, triggering vandalism of other buildings and excessive force by the police.
