“Nature doesn’t care if you’re gay” is a common theme for pride in the outdoors,
but is that true?
Identity, whether queer, left-handed, or bedazzled (although that really would be more fun) doesn’t hold a lot of sway when you’re on a hard climb. But people’s prejudices are reflected in outdoor spaces: access, performance, and representation are not the same for everyone. We have to move away from this dialogue that “nature is for everybody” and instead recognize that we need to make nature for everybody.
