Kyle Kaiser's Juncos eliminates the Spanish driver by a difference of 0.19 mph. The fight for the pole is not a foregone conclusion either, but in the end it is Simon Pagenaud who makes it. The Frenchman from Team Penske runs with an average of 229.992 mph and beats Ed Carpenter and Spencer Pigot. Surprising Colton Herta, who in his first participation is fifth on the grid in the first of the Honda-powered cars.
