"Hero of the Two Worlds" is the nickname that history has given to the patriot and champion of people’s freedom Giuseppe Garibaldi, for his heroic deeds accomplished on both sides of the Atlantic. A term which in motorsport indicates those (few) drivers who have won in the top open wheel categories of the Old and New continent: Formula 1 and IndyCar. Two categories that next weekend will both fire up their engines for the first grand prix of the season, one in the Bahrain desert, the other in the sunny St. Petersbourg.
The title of Hero of the Two Worlds particularly marked the career of Mario Andretti, legend of American motorsport, and the first driver to win a title in both categories. The ranking of heroes continues with the Brazilian Emerson Fittipaldi, who to the two titles won in F1 added almost twenty years later two Indy 500s and the IndyCar title (then called CART) in 1989.
