If the Safety Car in Formula 1 has been introduced steadily in a relatively recent time, the Pace Car in the United States has a longer story, especially at the Indianapolis 500. From 1911 to 1956, the pace car took the starting field on a single warm up lap. Then, at a prescribed speed, the pace car would pull off the track into the pits and allow the field to make a rolling start. Carl Graham Fisher, one of the founders of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, drove the pace car for several years. After Fisher’s death, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway president, Tony Hulman, drove the pace car immediately after giving the starting command. From 1957 to 1976, the starting procedure changed with the pace car leading the field for two warm up laps, this allowed the fans on the main stretch to see the entire field parade for once.
