The Firestone 600 was the 14th round of the 2016 IndyCar Series season. The race was originally scheduled as the 9th round of the series and originally began in June. Carlos Muñoz qualified first, followed by Dixon, who was trying to close the gap with Pagenaud for the title. Muñoz kept the lead until the first round of pit stops came, around lap 35. Newgarden took the lead. On lap 42 Daly and Newgarden were involved in a huge accident: Daly lost the control of his car, hit Newgarden and pushed the upside-down Newgarden’s car against the barrier. The accident resulted in a 30-lap caution, but the race never restarted since it was red flagged on lap 71 due to further heavy rainfall and then definitely suspended, with Hinchcliffe as leader ahead Hunter-Reay and Aleshin. The event was rescheduled on August 27 and Hinchcliffe kept the lead for most time, with Castroneves, Rahal, Kanaan and Carpenter fighting for the second position.
