This year the historic Laguna Seca track awards the 2022 NTT Indycar Series title; it’s the 17th consecutive time that the Astor Challenge Cup is decided at the last GP. The race saw a regular start, with Power maintaining the lead and rookie Ilott (still second after the race start) losing two positions to Rossi and O'Ward. Behind, however, Newgarden’s show is about to begin: last after a terrible qualifying, the American driver immediately overtakes 6 drivers in a few laps. The race flowed smoothly until lap 27, when an unexpected Alex Palou - the only one of the Ganassi's line up who seemed to be in fine form today - overtook Power for the lead and immediately began to gain an advantage on his rivals. A turn of events came on lap 39 when Ilott's splendid weekend suddenly ended due to an engine issue, causing the first caution of the race.
