The start of the race saw an excellent start of Herta ahead of Alexander Rossi, who took 2nd place on a Scott Dixon caught napping in turn 1. The first yellow flag came out during lap 2. Dalton Kellett spun off in turn 1 and then rejoined. During the restart on lap 4, the unbelievable happened. While under caution going green, Marcus Ericsson hit on the rear end Sébastien Bourdais, going airborne. Both cars got heavy damages on their respective front and rear wing and continued on to the pit road, but Bourdais retired. After another restart on lap 9 for debris, nothing of sensational happened and Herta led ahead of Rossi, Dixon, Grosjean and Rosenqvist. On lap 16, Scott McLaughlin spun off after a contact with Ed Jones, another caution came out. On lap 20, traffic jam happened on the restart!
