The Mid Ohio Sports Car Course is unique for Indycar, as no one features different straights for start and finish other than this track. But why do they have it?
Mid Ohio is a flowing track, with short straights and many turns. Turn 1, in particular, will be the object of this analysis: a long, 90-degree left coming off the pit straight, the fastest turn on the track apart from turns 3 and 7. Drivers approach Turn 1 from the right with light braking or even just a lift in good conditions.
At the start, however, cars are closer to each other, but, most importantly, they are slower. This means that they would come to Turn 1 without enough speed to brake safely, and thus obliged to take it flat out. Making a long 90-degree corner flat out can result in dangerous crashes, with drivers seeking space to close the turn.
