The Andretti family has a long tradition of success in motorsport. Five family members successfully raced in the Indy 500, but among them, only Mario was able to succeed in the historical competition, in 1969.
There is a peculiar expression that makes reference to the series of unfortunate events that has affected the members of the family throughout the years, the “Andretti’s curse”. Its origin dates back to 1970, when team owner Andy Granatelli had a major dispute with Mario Andretti's chief mechanic, Clint Brawner, who was fired. As a consequence, Brawner's wife is said to have cast a curse vowing that no Andretti would ever win at Indy again. That year, during the race, Mario encountered an issue both at the chassis and at the right rear suspension. Over the years, he suffered of 10 crashes and 14 mechanical failures.
