Welcome to Detroit! A 982-acre island in the Detroit River, Belle Isle, is owned by the City of Detroit, and hosts the Detroit Belle Isle racing circuit. Belle Isle has been home to the Detroit Grand Prix from 1992, albeit with interruptions, utilizing a temporary street circuit, originally used for CART races. In 2007, American Le Mans Series appeared on those streets, and still races there now that merged with other sports cars championships to become the IMSA Weathertech Sportscar Championship. After a four-year absence, the Detroit Grand Prix came back in 2012 and in 2013 the track has been reworked to the nowadays configuration, hosting the Indycar Series. Since then, the track has never suspended operations up to this day. In 2023, however the Detroit Grand Prix will move to the downtown, where F1 used to race in the 1980s.
