On Friday before race day in Indianapolis occurs what is traditionally known as “Carburetion Day”, a final free practice to adjust the engines’ carburetors. Despite IndyCar having no carburetor in their mechanics since 1963, the tradition has been preserved throughout the years. On Friday May 27th, the “Carb Day” was dominated by the American Legion Chip Ganassi Racing Honda of Tony Kanaan, at 227.114 mph, followed by his teammate Marcus Ericsson at 227.004 mph. Third came the Dale Coyne w. RWR car of the two-time Indy 500 winner Takuma Sato (226.839 mph), and then the PNC Bank Ganassi car of poleman Scott Dixon (226.696 mph). Among the “500” rookies, the fastest was Jimmie Johnson on the Carvana Chip Ganassi Racing car, seventh overall with 225.974 mph.
