Two frequently asked questions about my process:
*What are the little wood pieces that you put into the stretchers?
They are called tension keys or tightening keys and their purpose is to reinforce the canvas if it begins to sag. As I paint with thick textures of oil paint, the weight of the paint could sag the canvas. So I prefer to introduce the keys before starting work.
*Why you underpaint the canvas in orange?
I prefer to paint on a pre-colored background because I find it more easy to control the composition and the color scheme. It could be a warm color as orange but also other nuances. It depends on the main color scheme of the painting I intend to do… as I try to have a contrast with the background color. Preferably complimentary but not in all cases… Besides, in the end...
