This past January I went to #PalmerStation, Antarctic Peninsula, one of the three research bases in the United States Antarctic Program. There I conducted field experiments to study growth of microbes in response to climate warming, part of an NSF funded research project. This is one of the fastest warming areas on the planet. This warming influences the ocean, land, and ice environments. The majority of glaciers on the Antarctic Peninsula are retreating and this melting ice contributes to sea level rise. The ecosystems exposed when glaciers retreat are dominated by microbes like bacteria, archaea, and fungi.
