How do you cut tire molds? - veetireco uses a Sparker, which uses extremely high voltage to essentially burn metal off the steel molds, using copper relief plates that have been machined to match the shape of the tread. - Bicycle tires use two or three plates per mold, and they cut one half of the mold at a time those halves are pressed together during the vulcanization process to create the actual tire. - Each mold takes about 3-4 days to cut, as opposed to months to machine it by CNC. Having this resource in-house lets them prototype a new tire design or launch a new size in just 30-45 days! - Small details like the logo and size are etched into the mold, then they’re off to the production building to make tires!
