It starts with powdered metal made by pouring a 1mm stream of melted steel then blowing it against a wall where it immediately cools into a powder. Then, it’s cold pressed into shape, at which point it’s called a “green” part, and it’s very weak. . That’s what you’re seeing in the video, which we could easily snap. . Next, it’s heat treated to become within about 10% of the strength of a normal steel part. Benefit is that it can be made more quickly and in way more complex shapes than you could do with CNC machining. Or, at least, without a LOT of machining that would take up more time. Sintering isn’t all that much less expensive a process, the tooling is very expensive to make, but it’s fast. They can have a finished product in as little as 6 hours. .
