George "The Chili King" Karaidos Jr. died in 2019. Now the sign that made his nickname a Des Moines landmark is gone, too. Closed since the death of Karaidos, the restaurant just east of the busy intersection of Hickman and Merle Hay Roads lost its sign Thursday afternoon as a crew used a crane to take down the neon artifact.
