Sometimes I like to do random things to test myself. For the next two weeks, I decided to pull back on caffeine consumption. I’ve drank some form of caffeinated beverage each morning since college.
There are many benefits to caffeine, so my decision is not because I think it’s bad. My decision stems from that sluggish and groggy feeling I have in the morning when I don’t have it. The lethargic feeling we often get is due to the absence of the stimulating effects of caffeine on our central nervous system. Caffeine blocks the action of adenosine, a neurotransmitter promoting relaxation and sleepiness. Without caffeine, adenosine binds to its receptors in the brain, leading to that drowsiness feeling.
If you regularly consume caffeine, your body may develop a dependence on it. Abruptly stopping or reducing caffeine intake can result in withdrawal symptoms, so I’ll be reducing intake over these next few days.
