On the southeast coast of Oʻahu next to the shores of Maunalua lies one of the most historic valleys on the island, Kuli’ou’ou. From the ridges of the Ko’olau’s to Paiko wildlife sanctuary and Kanewai freshwater spring to the fringing coral reefs of Maunalua, Kuli’ou’ou is one of the most vivid examples of a modern-day ahupuaʻa. ⁣ ⁣ Hawaiian oral history and some linguistic and archaeological evidence indicate that the second migration of Polynesians came to the Hawaiian Archipelago from the Society Islands in approximately the thirteenth or fourteenth century and may have landed first in Maunalua, likely settling in Kuli’ou’ou based on archaeological evidence. One Hawaiian legend also supporting the theory of this second migration tells of a man named Moikeha, a Tahitian chief who came to the Maunalua area of Oʻahu, then returned to Tahiti, and brought his sisters Makapuu and Makaaoa back to Maunalua.
