May 1st in Hawaiʻi is known as Lei Day, where it’s a cultural practice for residents to give one another a flower garland. On this special #Sunday #LeiDay we honor Kalehuawehe – a surf break on the South Shore of Oʻahu whose name comes from the moʻolelo (legend) of #lei giving and heʻenalu (#surfing). #Kalehuawehe can be translated as “the lehua flower lei removed” and the name of this wave originates from a surf session with a warrior Pīkoiakaʻalalā and the beautiful chiefess of Waikīkī, Kahamaluʻihi. #Kanakamaoli surfer Hokulani Topping (hohohokulani) plays the aliʻi (chiefess) Kahamaluʻihi and narrates this modern reenactment. Keau Thompson (keaukai) plays the koa (warrior) from Mānoa, Pīkoaiakaʻalalā. Shot, edited, and directed by nick.oahu during the largest south swell so far of the season, we celebrate from the shore of what we now call Kaimana Beach and the wave commonly referred to as Castle’s, the moʻolelo of Kalehuawehe on Lei Day.
