This year is the 10th anniversary of Pūnana Leo o Mānoa, and #February is Mahina ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i (Hawaiian Language Month). Pūnana Leo o Mānoa is a part of ʻAha Pūnana Leo – a grassroots effort founded in 1983 with the sole purpose of reviving ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi. Now, ʻAha Pūnana Leo serves as a local, national, and international model for language revitalization. ⁣ ⁣ Over the past several decades, ʻAha Pūnana Leo established and built numerous programs throughout the Islands, helped to lift a 90-year ban on teaching Hawaiian in public and private schools, advocated for other indigenous people, and raised awareness about the consequences of the loss of indigenous languages. ⁣ ⁣ Pūnana Leo means “nest of voices” and depicts the dominant learning method in these schools as students are “fed” solely their native language and culture much like the way young birds are cared for in their own nests.
