Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was inspired by the Aloha Spirit after his first visit to Hawaiʻi in 1959. He visited Hawaiʻi a number of times during his life, including one year before the historic Selma March of 1965. On that visit, he spoke at the first conference for the Hawaiʻi State Human Rights Commission. There he was moved by the Islands’ multi-ethnic population and compassion for one another, demonstrating to him a perfect example of “racial harmony” while he fought to end segregation of African-Americans across the U.S.⁣ ⁣ Today, we commemorate MLK and his great dream of universal peace and justice. We celebrate his life and legacy of bringing hope and healing to a Nation once divided. Through his timeless acts of courage, compassion, dignity, and humility, Dr. King embodied the same Aloha Spirit that inspired him. Let us not only remember to celebrate but to also serve like Dr. King and live with Aloha. ⁣ #Aloha#AlohaSpirit#AnywhereAloha #MartinLutherKingJr#MLKDay
