On this #GivingTuesday we're reminded of “The Giving Tree.” In this story, there is a kumulā’au (tree) and a kanaka (human). As a keiki (child), they are friends: the child enjoys playing with the tree, climbing its trunk, and swinging from its branches. The tree is very giving to this child. As the child becomes a teenager, they continue to take things from the tree, like money from their coconuts, a house from their branches, and a canoe from their trunk. The teenager grows into an adult and eventually into an elder who takes so much from the tree that only a stump remains at the end of the story. Even so, with every stage of giving, the tree was happy, never expecting anything in return.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Giving Tuesday is a day that encourages people to give back in whatever ways they can.
