In Hawaiʻi, #Makahiki marks the start of the new year and is the time to honor Lono —one of the four major Akua (Gods) in Hawaiian culture. Lono was known as the god of peace, agriculture, and fertility amongst other things. During this four-month season, war was forbidden, and a variety of Hawaiian sports were played across Hawaiʻi. Today, there are still Makahiki festivals and games celebrated on each island.
