Papakōlea Beach, also known as Green Sand Beach, is a “once in a lifetime” place to visit on Hawai‘i Island. It's one of only two green sand beaches in the United States—and one of four in the world.
The beach itself is carved into a 49,000-year-old cinder cone belonging to Mauna Loa. Green crystals (olivines) washed out of the volcano, giving the sand its distinct color and name. Those green sand crystals are also mixed with black sand (lava) and white sand (coral/shells). If you visit, grab a handful and take a closer look. It's truly breathtaking.
