When used by demigod Maui, Mānaiakalani (a mythical fishhook) helped to pull up entire islands from under the sea. Maui said to his brothers, “When the hook is set, paddle the canoe forward with all your might. DO NOT look back under any circumstance!!” The entirety of the Island of Kauaʻi was pulled up through unwavering faith in the words of Maui. Kauaʻi Island would have been bigger had a certain brother not lost faith in the words of Maui and turned around, at which point the hook released, leaving us with the Island of Kauaʻi as we know it today. ⁣ ⁣ This principle of unwavering faith is present and flourishing on the double-hulled canoe, Mānaiakalani, named after this famous hook.
