“May Day is Lei Day” in Hawaiʻi. The Hawaiian lei represents friendship, love, and respect, and Lei Day is a chance to honor that. Traditionally, lei were placed around a person’s neck because the head and back were once considered sacred. Today, the lei presenter may also place the lei over the wearer’s head. In Hawaiian, this “head lei” is known as a “lei po‘o.”
Across the Islands, people celebrate the holiday in many ways, such as gifting colorful lei to one another, hula dancing, and crowning Lei Day royalty. It’s a day of tradition and joy that we’re honored to share with you.
