#OnThisDay in 1956, two legends tied for 1st (2.06m/6-9.25) in the high jump at the West Coast Relays in Fresno, CA. Charlie Dumas, who became history’s first 7-footer at the Olympic Trials, and the future nba Hall-of-Famer realbillrussell. #VintageUSATF Both would win gold medals at the Melbourne Olympics later in the year, Dumas in the high jump and Russell, who had led the University of San Francisco to its 2nd straight NCAA title in March, as a key member of the winning usabasketball team. Dumas was inducted into the U.S. Track and Field Hall-of-Fame in 1990. Russell was ranked #7 in the world in the high jump in 1956 by T&F News (Dumas was #1), but went on to a Hall-of-Fame career winning 11 nba titles in 13 seasons with the celtics. 📸 sfchronicle & USATF
