In 2013, #CGIU alum Donnel Baird made a Commitment to Action to bring clean energy to communities in inner cities. Donnel grew up in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn where he witnessed firsthand the realities of inner city living, one of which was the relentless, unforgiving cold. “I remember how inefficiently we would heat our one-bedroom apartment. When it got cold outside, we would turn on the stove and open the oven door,” he said. Donnel’s commitment has grown to become BlocPower, a social enterprise that combats climate change, strengthens communities, and provides employment opportunities to individuals in the inner cities. To date, BlocPower has initiated or completed 378 building retrofits with more than 300 in the pipeline.
