These World Oceans Day images are a dispatch from the field: Professors David Ginsburg and Karla Heidelberg are wrapping up a Maymester course on Eleuthera Island, in the Bahamas, where students assisted with efforts to restore natural populations of coral reef in the area. Swipe for all three photos from ginsbuda:
1: Student Claudia Winarko surveys man-made reef structures designed to enhance fisheries productivity off Eleuthera Island.
2: This is elkhorn coral (acropora palmata) that once dominated Caribbean reefs, but it is currently listed as an endangered species.
3: Student Rilee Sanders tends coral seedlings (acropora cervicornis) that will be used to reestablish natural populations of this endangered coral on Eleuthera Island, as well as across the Caribbean.
