The year was 1931, two years into the Great Depression and the heyday of the canning industry in central Wisconsin—an opportunity which led Ed Virchow to found the firm we are today.  . Ed learned to audit on the job at Waterloo Canning Company from an experienced coworker. When his mentor moved away, Ed inherited client work at several local canning factories. . Six years later, Ed hired his first employee, Francis “Sam” Krause, and formed Virchow & Krause Certified Public Accountants in 1946.  . After a few more hires, including one recent grad who hitchhiked to his just-stop-by interview, the partnership of Virchow, Krause & Company was formed in 1953, serving local business, school districts and municipalities. . The firm we are today was off to the races, spurred on by a group of determined founders, a serendipitous industrial base and a whole lot of hard work.  .
