Pacing the stage of the Eisenhower Chapel in his bright purple shirt and signature cowboy hat, Irvin Moore said he only realized how powerful a tool education can be after earning several associate’s degrees while incarcerated. Moore, who was arrested in 1969 for fatally shooting a man, earned his degree after he helped bring education programs to Pennsylvania prisons in the early 1970s. After spending 52 years incarcerated, he now serves as a community liaison for Penn State’s Restorative Justice Initiative, still fighting for many of the same changes he was demanding decades ago. In an effort to raise awareness of the challenges people face as they transition out of incarceration and back into society, RJI, alongside Penn State’s Student Restorative Justice Initiative, organized the 2024 Reentry Reimagined Summit in the Pasquerilla Spiritual Center Wednesday.
