On this, the 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, we are indebted to the Greatest Generation of American sailors, soldiers, marines and airmen who defended our country during World War II. One of our most notable alumni of that generation was Rear Admiral James S. Freeman, Sr. (MMI class of 1917, USNA 1921) who commanded the USS Alchiba, supplying Marines at Guadalcanal. During a Japanese torpedo attack on Nov. 28, 1942, he ordered her engines to full throttle and ran the ship ashore, saving the lives of his crew and the much-needed ammunition. He received the Navy Cross for his actions and is a member of the Alabama Military Hall of Fame. Following retirement, RADM Freeman served on the staff of MMI until his death in 1962. #pearlharbor #wwii #alumni #pacifictheater #pearlharbor75 #warriorwednesday #veteran #hero #navy #navycross #sailor #rearadmiral #americanhero #neverforget #usnavy #usna
