1st Shots Fired••• During the attack on Pearl Harbor 74 years ago, MMI alumnus William W. Outerbridge fired the first shots in defense of the U.S. during WWII. Outerbridge, an MMI cadet in the class of 1923, was a skipper abroad the USS Ward. On the morning of Dec. 7th, 1941, then Capt. Outerbridge detected and sank a Japanese midget sub at Pearl Harbor. Exactly three years later, as a commander of the USS Brian, he would rescue crew members from the USS Ward after it was destroyed by Japanese kamikaze attacks in Ormoc Bay, Leyte. He retired from the Navy in 1957 as a Rear Admiral.
