Katherine Johnson was one of the first African-American women to work as a mathematician for NASA. Her work helped astronauts land on the moon, and she has been instrumental in shaping our current understanding of the universe.⁠ ⁠ In 2016, the NASA Ames Research Center in California celebrated the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. To mark the occasion, the center launched an exhibit titled Katherine Johnson and the moon landing. The exhibit showcased artifacts from the space agency’s collection, including a replica of Johnson’s desk from the mission control room on the day of the moon landing.
