Malcolm X was a polarizing and highly influential civil rights leader, minister, and human rights activist. He was born in Omaha, Nebraska - but he moved to Lansing Michigan after the Ku Klux Klan made threats against his family. ⁠ ⁠ Malcolm's early life was more than challenging. In 1931 his father was murdered by a White supremacist group. At the age of 6, he was placed into foster care after his grieving mother was committed to a mental health institution.
