Baker was a prominent figure in the Civil Rights Movement. She helped to organize the Montgomery bus boycott in 1955, led by Martin Luther King Jr. Baker also was an activist for women's rights, and she helped to organize the Women's Political Council in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. She was known for her nonviolent activism and her work on behalf of African Americans.
