Baker was a prominent figure in the Civil Rights Movement. She helped to organize the Montgomery bus boycott in 1955, led by Martin Luther King Jr. Baker also was an activist for women's rights, and she helped to organize the Women's Political Council in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. She was known for her nonviolent activism and her work on behalf of African Americans. Ella Baker was known as the “behind the scenes coordinator” of the Civil Rights Movement. “You didn't see me on television, you didn't see news stories about me. The kind of role that I tried to play was to pick up pieces or put together pieces out of which I hoped organization might come. My theory is, strong people don't need strong leaders.”, Baker said. Many of Baker’s contributions to the Civil Rights Movement were not recognized until after her death in 1986. In 1999 she was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Bill Clinton. #blackhistory #blackhistorymonth#africanamerican #365da...
